Eco-Friendly Favors
We’ve all been to baby showers where the favor was an elaborate concoction in plastic or candy so sweet and gooey you couldn’t even eat it.
If you’re throwing a baby shower, why not give eco-friendly baby shower favors that are not only good to the earth but useful and practical.
You don’t have to give out candy or favors containing plastics that take forever to decompose in a landfill. You want to be mindful, especially if the expectant mom is very green-minded, to give baby shower favors that are cute and show that you care about the environment.
Raising Plants, Raising Awareness
One fabulous idea is to order sapling tree buds from the Arbor Day Foundation. They will ship you small packages with a budding tree shoot ready for planting. Just tie a piece of jute twine around it for the perfect baby shower favor. Everyone can plant the new tree in honor of the new baby.
You can also do the same thing with small plants. If you have a garden, you’re in luck. Dig up and separate a few of your favorite plants into small pots that the girls can take home as favors. Maybe it’s a favorite blooming flower or a shade-loving hosta. When you divide up your garden plants, you’re giving a gift that will be lovely and also peaceful to the environmental balance of nature.
Garden Favors
What if you are having a shower mid-January in Chicago? It’s not very practical to go out and dig up some flowers, but you can still give flowers to all the ladies. Go to a grocery store floral department and ask for a few potted miniature rose bushes. They usually cost around $5 and come in pretty pots. If you can afford it, give one to each girl. But if not, you can divide up that one rose bush into at least three other smaller containers and give those out as favors.
In addition to the garden theme, you can make favors out of just about anything. Take an orange and stick cloves into it. Glue on a pretty ribbon for a pomander ball that your guests can hang in their kitchens when they get home. The fragrance is lovely and it costs you barely anything but your time.
DIY Favors
Give Fresh Fruit
Or, give out fresh fruit baskets as a favor. Have a basket of crisp fall apples at the door and ask everyone to take one as a favor on their way out.
You can also give one fresh pear wrapped in netting and tied with a bow. Dress it up and make it look pretty when the guests arrive at their tables.
They’ll look darling at each person’s place setting and also make a practical favor that will be eaten and enjoyed.

Love the reusable water bottle favors. In the past, I've also used little violet plants that I picked up for less than a $1 each at a local shop. The guests loved them.
Very good ideas, and not only for baby showers but other favors for parties.
Great ideas! I like the idea of the sapling tree buds from the Arbor Day Foundation as shower favors. Voted up and useful. :)
